Rock and Read Summer Program

Rock and Read is a movement-driven academic support program empowering children to set goals for their bodies alongside their goals for growing their literacy skills.

Rock and Read eliminates the notion that learning must happen at a desk with a paper and pencil and instead invites children to learn through joy and high-level engagement while developing critical life skills and dispositions – goal setting, growth mindset, problem-solving, perseverance, self-assessment, and reflection.

Enforce Literacy Goals and Strengthen Problem Solving and Motor Planning Skills

Group Learning

Each group, or “pod” will consist of two to five students. They will work with a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant for their movement program with climbing and with a certified teacher for individual instruction and utilization of the Readorium Reading Program.

This program can be a stand-alone program for children with all ability levels or can be integrated into current FTC Kids’ therapy plans.

Program Intention

This summer program was added to FTC Kids to enforce literacy goals and strengthen problem-solving and motor planning skills that may have been impacted by the prolonged virtual school schedule. Most children were unable to get the attention they needed to learn and master skills especially reading. Adding the read element to a scientifically proven movement program can help physical goals can transfer to the joy of reading.

The children will spend at least 30 minutes on the rock wall under the guidance of a certified occupational therapist, 10-15 minutes in a goal-setting reflection setting, and 30 minutes engaged in reading instruction with a literacy support specialist (ages 5-7) and on the Readorium software on-site (ages 7-16). Readorium access continues at home and is recommended for at least 30 minutes a day.

Benefits of program

Rock climbing offers many opportunities to build strength and endurance, coordination and motor planning, bilateral coordination, core muscle strength, visual motor skills, visual perception skills, problem-solving skills, sensory processing, executive functioning, and self-esteem!

Enrollment for this program is open.

About Readorium

Readorium Rising Reader (elementary enrichment or support) and Readorium Scholar (upper elementary to middle school level enrichment or support) are adaptive supplementary software systems that teach students the strategies and word-learning skills needed to deeply comprehend grade-appropriate informational text. Text and support systems adjust to each student’s skill level as they use the program.  Their mission is based on the belief that the world is a fascinating place and that students come to school with natural curiosity and the desire to learn. It is our job as educators to keep that desire burning. To that end, Readorium provides students with the keys to learning the literacy skills that will make them knowledgeable citizens and prepare them to meet the challenges they will encounter in a rapidly changing world.
